[...] How much information an organisation releases is, similarly, a political decision. This goes towards the issue of transparency (as well as the previously stated potential outcome of boring the brains out of stakeholders). [...]

if one is generally distrusted, eg bankers, the only chance of gaining credibility is full and frank disclosure. Trust matters to the financial sector because the nature of their products mean they are not open to the same scrutiny and inspection as other goods so customers buy on the basis of reputation. If the product is not trusted the seller will be forced to cut margins or the buyer will go elsewhere and find an alternative lower risk way of meeting a need. All that saves the banks at present is the goodwill resulting from the government underwriting deposits. The downside of that is that bankers are not subject to the moral hazard that the distrust caused by their activities has generated. Unfortunately the system created by big bang destroyed a housing market that served the needs of the community and diverted resources that could have been used to develop the real economy and added to human misery along with sub-prime loans. The real culprits are perhaps those lobbyists acting for the banks that persuaded legislators that the primrose path we are still stuck on was really the yellow brick road.
